ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Mike Ursery serves as an Overhead Crane Territory Manager for Hi-Speed Industrial Service at its Millington, TN location. His specific areas of expertise include electrical troubleshooting and maintenance, mechanical training and maintenance, and hoists.

CASE STUDY: GETTING TO THE ROOT OF THE ISSUE WITH OVERHEAD CRANE OPERATION

One of Mike’s customers, a structural tower manufacturing company, reached out to Mike when they began having issues with one of their overhead cranes operating sporadically. After troubleshooting the crane, Mike and his team uncovered deferred maintenance issues with the crane’s motors and controls and damage caused by operational misuse. The team went straight to work, pulling out the controls and updating to Variable Frequency Drives to allow the cranes to operate more smoothly and limit the possibility of operational misuse or jogging. Benefits of Variable Frequency Drives include a controlled starting current, elimination of voltage sag, lower power demand on start, controlled stopping and acceleration, and elimination of the need for expensive mechanical drive components such as gear boxes. In addition to updating the drives, Mike also provided the company’s crane operators with training to ensure the cranes would remain operational with less frequent maintenance. As a result, the client is now able to manufacture their product more quickly with less down time due to maintenance and unplanned downtime.
