Hi‑Speed Industrial Service has completed the installation of a purpose‑built isolation test pad designed to support precision testing of large electric motors and generators, including vertical motor configurations. This installation significantly enhances Hi‑Speed’s electrical testing capabilities and aligns with industry‑recognized vibration and testing standards.

Capacity & Performance

The test pad is designed to safely accommodate:

  • Motors up to 40,000 pounds
  • Large, low‑speed, and vertical motors that are difficult to isolate using traditional methods
  • Rigid mounting and clamping for vibration evaluation, balance verification, and troubleshooting

The design allows vibratory energy generated during testing to be absorbed by the mass of the foundation and subsoil, preventing interference from surrounding structures and ensuring accurate vibration measurements.

Integrated Testing Capability

The isolation test pad completes Hi‑Speed’s dedicated electrical testing area and integrates seamlessly with:

  • Hipotronics MTS 13.8 kVA Test Panel for high‑voltage electrical testing
  • A & W Hydro‑Brake Dynamometer for controlled mechanical load testing

Together, these systems provide Hi‑Speed with testing capabilities for all your equipment needs.

How this Helps Our Customers

This investment reinforces Hi‑Speed Industrial Service’s commitment to quality, safety, and technical excellence. The new isolation test pad enables accurate testing of the largest and most demanding machines while meeting recognized industry standards, positioning Hi‑Speed as an industry leader in motor and generator repair and testing capabilities.

In short, we offer:

  • A state-of-the-art test pad that handles large and vertical equipment
  • Zero-vibration testing, resulting in pure performance-based analysis for your equipment
  • A comprehensive, one-stop shop and in‑house solution for electrical, mechanical, and vibration testing of motors and generators

Engineering Notes:

Standards & Engineering Basis

The engineering and design of the test pad are based on:

  • EASA recommendations for motor and generator testing foundations
  • NEMA MG‑1, Part 7 vibration standards for electric motors and generators

These standards emphasize proper mounting, isolation, and mass to achieve reliable vibration measurements and consistent test results. The installation reflects best practices for service centers testing large and low‑speed rotating equipment.

Test Pad Design & Construction

The new test pad measures 16 feet by 14 feet and incorporates a 12‑inch reinforced center shaft hole, allowing for safe and accurate vertical motor testing. The foundation system was engineered and installed to minimize vibration transmission and ensure repeatable test results across a wide range of motor sizes and operating speeds.

The foundation includes:

  • Deep foundation piers ranging from 35 to 45 feet in length, providing exceptional stability
  • 28 yards of reinforced concrete, fully encased with isolation materials
  • Continuous rebar reinforcement throughout the pad and foundation
  • 100% isolation pads surrounding the concrete inertia block
  • Five Star® epoxy grout bonding the cast iron test plate to the foundation

The total system mass includes:

  • Cast iron T‑slotted test plate weighing 20,570 pounds
  • 115,000 pounds of concrete and reinforcing steel
  • Additional weight from piers and grout, resulting in a total system weight of approximately 70 tons

This substantial mass and isolation design ensures damping of vibratory forces and prevents resonance, creating a stable and repeatable testing environment.
